Contributory Aged Parent (864/884)

Parents over the age of 65 can lodge a Contributory Parent (864) visa whilst in Australia on a valid visa – such as a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (884) visa. These visas involves making a non-refundable deposit to the Australian government.

The contributory amounts are requested once the parents have passed health and police checks. The temporary (884) visa lasts for two years, and while this visa cannot be extended or regranted, the visa holder may then apply for the permanent (864) visa. The parents become permanent resident when the 884 visa is granted.

If the aged parent is not able to obtain a visitor visa without the ‘no further stay’ condition, they will need to lodge an offshore parent visa, or proceed with the lengthy process that is the non-contributory visa.
